The Acjachemen and Tongva peoples have cared for Puvungna, the village CSULB is built upon, and the surrounding lands since time immemorial; CalState Long Beach’s short history has been one of land theft and disrespect to Indigenous peoples, our ceremonial grounds, and the remains of our ancestors buried on the remaining 22 open space acres of Puvungna. Come out tomorrow to support us as we demand that CalState Long Beach adhere to the terms of our lawsuit settlement and protect Puvungna in perpetuity, under a conservation easement cared for by an Indigenous land trust! Please arrive by 2:30pm if possible, to find parking off campus and get to the meeting point to begin our action together. Byeongyeon is an unmyserious singer-songwriter who loves to talk about her universal and personal experiences as an immigrant, as a woman and as a human being. Having moved around her entire life - from Korea to Australia and finally to the city of angels - Byeonghyeon values the sense of belonging among diversity and hopes to foster connection through her music. Byeonghyeon’s genre is usually r&b and indie/folk music and you can find her singing early 2000s korean music at: @ByeonghyeonMusic

Hi! My name is Kathryn D’Costa and I’m a 16-year-old singer songwriter. I mostly write songs of the indie-pop genre because that’s what I resonate with the most. Nearly all the songs I write are either stemmed from experiences of those around me that have strong messages to share. I generally perform with my guitar because it’s what I’ve been playing music on for 10 years, I just have this emotional attachment to it!

Your attendance and donation at our Summer Celebration & Fundraiser will directly support our goal of raising $10,000 for two of our most critical community-based programs - the Environmental Justice Organizing Academy (EJOA) and the Defending the Sacred Youth Internship Program. 🌱

Through an eight-week academy, EJOA is a year-round program that prepares low-income youth of color to mobilize and investigate environmental injustices and create systemic change through both grassroots organizing strategies and policy making. EJOA also hosts workshops at local high schools in Orange County’s most impacted communities. EJOA graduates have advanced to staff and leadership roles at OCEJ and in the community. Three out of five OCEJ staff members are EJOA graduates.

In collaboration with Acjachemen and Tongva indigenous activists, youth interns develop social media campaigns, fundraising strategies, and programming with Friends of Puvungna, in service to the defense and restoration of sacred sites across Long Beach and Orange County 🪶 .

Since 2022, OCEJ Defending the Sacred interns have organized gatherings for Native youth, including poetry readings, workshops on traditional foodways, Acjachemen basket weaving, and discussions on identity and the importance of sacred sites. In 2024, Defending the Sacred Youth Interns will continue to support intergenerational gatherings for local Indigenous communities. 🪶✨

OCEJ will be hosting virtual "office hours" for folks to come in ask questions, share ideas, plan together, and overall work together to envision a new zoning map in the hopes to address some of our community's most pressing needs.

👨🏼‍🌾Are you a Santa Ana resident passionate about protecting the environment and health of your community? Are you interested in learning more about soil lead and bioremediation? Then please apply to OCEJ’s 2024 Soil Lead Bioremediation Cohort!

We are looking for 10 residents who will learn how to do soil sampling and bioremediation to assist in remediation at residences in our communities that are in areas of high levels of soil lead. We aim to make this cohort an annual one, hoping to recruit more and more residents, and also hoping that previous cohorts will help assist in teaching new ones, empowering them to become leaders of their own communities and to uplift and share knowledge with each other.

This year OCEJ was invited to attend the OC Children's Educational Water Festival along with 60+ other orgs! At our booth we provided a DIY Water Filter, DIY Seed Mud Balls, Protect Puvungna Coloring Book, Lead to the Garden Comic book giveaway, and hand painting station to build our OCEJ tree.
